Montvale History

Built in 1899 as the first in a series of buildings along West First Avenue, the Montvale Hotel remains one of the most visible buildings in the area. The Montvale stands as one of the city's best examples of Spokane's development at the turn of the century. With the demolition of the Pennington Wing of the Davenport Hotel, the Montvale has gained the distinction as Spokane’s oldest hotel.

Built for Judge John Binkley, the Montvale Hotel provided temporary housing for the swelling influx of miners, laborers etc. to the Spokane area at the turn of the century. After years of use as a hotel, the building was converted into a youth hostel during EXPO 1974 to house the masses of visitors to the Spokane area for that international event.

In 1980, the Montvale's upper floors were closed and the process of dilapidation began. In 1996, the building was purchased by the ConoverBond Company.
