SPOKANE, Wash. -- Design students from Washington State University Spokane will spend the first week of fall semester, Aug. 29-Sept. 1, brainstorming, planning, drafting and presenting design projects that may ultimately have an influence on the future redevelopment of downtown Spokane.

The Holley Mason Building, currently the temporary home of Lewis and Clark High School, located on Howard St. just south of Second Ave., is the site for the Fourth Annual Community Design and Construction Charrette at the WSU Spokane Interdisciplinary Design Institute. Robert C. Brewster, Jr., owner and developer of the Holley Mason Building, is the sponsor of this year's event.

Teams of students from architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and construction management will be working collaboratively to create an innovative plan to develop the Holley Mason block and the surrounding urban areas. Students must include the following required elements in their designs: retail shops and restaurants, administrative offices, a combination of 80 apartment and condominium units, and a 200-car parking structure. All of these features are to be interconnected with pedestrian walkways and open spaces.

"This is an opportunity for students to have input and to come up with a plan that could potentially be used or have some influence in future development. Even if only one good idea comes out of this project, there is a definite benefit," says Brewster. "Spokane is fortunate to have design and construction programs that are willing to participate in the community. The students' ideas create optimism."

Not only are the final designs to be realistic and appropriate to downtown Spokane, but the designs must also be ones that can be feasibly built. This includes a working construction plan with project phasing and sequencing and a preliminary project budget and schedule.

Students will tour the Holley Mason Building on the first day of the four-day charrette and spend the following two days in the studio working on the projects. The week will wrap up on Friday with the judging of the completed designs followed by awards and an all-campus barbecue. The students' designs will go on display Sept. 1 in the Design Institute Gallery at the Riverpoint campus, 668 N. Riverpoint Blvd.

For more information on the Interdisciplinary Design Institute, see the Web site at www.idi.spokane.wsu.edu. Charrette projects will be posted on the Web after judging is complete. Past charrettes focused on a Ron Wells development on West Sprague in Browne's Addition, Riverfront Park, and the former site of the Spokane MarketPlace.
